SAFA Skysailor Magazine

5 AUTUMN 2025 | March-April-May SKY SAILOR competitions at Corryong and Bright, we experienced some days of classic strong conditions with excellent tasks. The skills of the whole field were increasing, with many pilots making goal on most days. Although, I am a very average pilot in the Sports category. I’d like to offer a personal thanks to my fellow pilots who shared the air with me once again, to the event organisers and support staff who do so much to make the event happen, to the SAFA staff who support technical aspects of the event in the back end, to our drivers who turn up at just the right time, to the local commu- nities who tolerate our weirdness, and to our families who forgive our absence. I know most of our members do not have the opportunity or inclination to get involved in competitions. Nonetheless, I urge you to be involved in organised flying events in some way. If there is no event in your area put up your hand and try to organise something. No matter what type of event it is, I have always felt those participating have learned something and improved the safety of our flying community. In this edition of Skysailor please turn your attention to Iain Clarke’s article on ‘Unauthorised Aviation Operations’. Unfortunately, we have received reports that some of our fellow members may be operating speed wings without the appro- priate authorisation. This is kind of like riding a motorbike on public roads when you only have a car licence. However, in our case, the penalty for the individual and consequences for our flying community are much more serious. On a more boring note, when you log into the SAFA database through the members area, you might notice that you are being asked a range of questions you have not had to answer in the past. The next time many people will see this is during membership renewal. In most cases, the additional data we need to capture is a consequence of us implement- ing requirements of CASR Part 149. If you have any questions please ask the SAFA office staff. I am not sure when I will next get to capture a moment flying cross-country. I am dreaming of cool new routes around the outskirts of the ACT… Corryong PG Open Photo: Heidi K
