54 SKY SAILOR March-April-May | AUTUMN 2025 After Christmas, I set off on my usual pilgrimage to Bright, to fly with my friend Brian. I left Newcastle and while driving through Sydney, called Brian who was then towing in the flatlands near Deniliquin. I promptly diverted and put 900km in to get there just before evening. Paragliding Christmas – the Good, the Better and the Disappointing by James Thompson Next day, with over wind of 20km/h on the ground, I felt very hesitant as this was my first tow since last year and the first time I had tried to go XC in the flatlands. First tow yielded no thermal and I landed, second tow saw me landing 80km NNE in the irrigation area SE of Griffith. I’d never towed in the flatlands, I followed every road in front of me through huge areas of nothingness.
