61 AUTUMN 2025 | March-April-May SKY SAILOR the water. After launching, there was nil wind due to a unique inversion layer that occasionally occurs in front of launch. This is nicknamed the ‘Dudley Bubble’. When there is a NW wind in the early morning, it brings in a warm layer of air, later when the coastal breeze kicks in, it creates a bubble of warm air over the top of cool air coming in off the coast and traps any wind. PIC has turned 180º to search for lift, causing the wing to cease flying. PIC collided with trees causing some injury to a leg muscle. Pilots need to be aware of this atmospheric anomaly and, if nil lift is encountered, continue flight to the north where prevailing wind travels and then turn back in lift or land on the beach. #1658 – BPG beach/ocean landing, Long Reef, NSW A low-hours pilot (PG2) was flying their wing at Long Reef (NSW). The wind strength decreased and as they lost altitude, PIC made the decision to land. They misjudged the separation distance between themselves and terrain, and their harness momentarily contacted vege- tation. This resulted in them being spun in the harness, with a twist in the lines. They were too low to the ground to correct the Forms and Documents SAFA Documents are now available in the Member Zone of the SAFA website .
