44 SKY SAILOR March-April-May | AUTUMN 2026 If you fly cross-country in Australia, chances are you’ve seen ‘Squiggly’ open on someone’s phone. Squiggly is a live tracking platform used by pilots, retrieve drivers and spectators to follow flights in real time. The current Squiggly pulls tracking data from SkyLines and displays it on a clean, easy-to-read map, showing who is airborne, who is climbing or gliding, who has landed, and where everyone is in relation to each other. When I started flying XC, Squiggly was already there. At firs,t it was a way to find my friends at the end of the day, so I could retrieve them. Over time, it became a permanent screen on my phone, sitting next to XCTrack, showing where people got low, how high base was, which lines were working, where pilots bombed out, and, of course, to chase down my friends!
