46 SKY SAILOR March-April-May | AUTUMN 2026 The moment it clicked I had built Squiggly for myself and my friends and didn’t expect it to become as popular as it did. What surprised me was realising others weren’t only using it from the couch, but also in the air, as well as on the ground to retrieve their friends. Squiggly wasn’t just a toy, it had become genuinely useful. Over the years, I had plenty of ideas how to improve it, but seeing it help the com- munity was what inspired me to put in the effort required to get it to the next level. Why Squiggly took off Radio gives you static filled fragments of information when the pilot is able to take their hands off controls and you can make them out over the hiss and crackle. Squiggly gives you the whole picture. But so do some other live-tracking tools. What became clear again and again was that people love Squiggly because it’s simple. That simplicity was the secret. It wasn’t about more features, it was about being dead easy. Even the most technology- averse retiree can figure it out, open it, see who’s flying, tap a pilot, drive. Other tools have more knobs.
