SAFA Skysailor Magazine

10 SKY SAILOR January | February 2022 will need a permit to gain access (permits are obtainable in Burketown). Are you into fishing? Burketown is the barra- mundi capital of Australia! But remember, this is full-on saltwater croc country, so bring a big boat… Nearby Sweers Island has lovely sandy beaches, clear waters and a distinct lack of crocs! There, you basically only have to worry about sharks. Inland, there is Adel’s Grove and Lawn Hill Gorge – both are on a magnificent, permanent- ly flowing waterway and well out of reach of the crocs (and the sharks and stingers to, for that matter) – well worth a visit, or better still, fly there on a Glory cloud and have a swim and lunch after landing there! Have I inspired you or scared you off? The Morning Glory clouds are truly magnificent, but you do need to be organised, and have a ground crew. The Burketown experience itself is certainly something different. Some people love it, others not. It is an ‘out of the way’ place for sure. However, if you want to experience what very few people in the world get to see, then get yourself organised! For a bit more information, visit www.burke townmg.net.au , go to the ‘resources’ section and have a look at the list of scientific research that has been conducted on these elusive waves. If you read through the studies, you will notice that there remain a fair few contradictory theo- ries on the subject Two sailplanes jump a gap between clouds on their way to the NT border, some 100 miles away, over total tiger country Chasing Outback Glory
