35 January | February 2024 SKY SAILOR #1152 – Hang glider accident, NSW PIC was competing with their hang glider in an event at Gulgong (NSW). They were in the process of undertaking an aerotow. On tow, at an altitude of approximately 400ft AGL, PIC suffered a serious medical event and lost control of the aircraft. The hang glider entered an undesirable state, broke the weak link and descended uncontrolled, impacting the terrain. The pilot sustained serious injuries and the aircraft was substantially damaged. Age, fatigue, stress and the use of alcohol and other drugs can influence your performance when undertaking aviation-related activities. Use IMSAFE before each flight: • • Illness, are you well? • • Medication – are you free from the effect of drugs? • • Stress – are you free from significant stress? • • Alcohol – are you free from the effects of alcohol? • • Fatigue – are you adequately rested? • • Emotion – are you clear headed enough to fly? • • Eating – have you eaten properly and are you hydrated?
