Both had received the same briefing, confirmed that they understood the warnings about the fickle and narrow lift band, and understood the flight plan. Both pilots were tracking E-W along the ridge, with PIC1 in front with some 200m horizontal separation, and PIC2 slightly higher (10-20m). PIC1 then turned 180º from the ridge and was aware of PIC2 still oncoming but higher, and held position with their right wingtip to the ridge. As the two approached head-on, PIC2 observed PIC1 climbing directly towards them and was too slow to react.
