35 July | August 2022 SKY SAILOR The council responsible for clearing vege- tation from the surrounds of the airfield had been approached at least twice prior to this accident to perform this task, to no avail. AIRS #1576 – PG pilot in trees at Mystic A low airtime pilot under supervision launched their paraglider from Mystic (Vic) at the height of the day in conditions atypical of the site. Not having recognised this, the pilot flew in leeside conditions with a degraded glide. In com- mitting to attain the normal landing paddock (rather than the more feasible emergency landing paddock), the pilot failed to clear a treed ridge and landed in trees. AIRS #1619 – Primrose sand dune PG flying incident PIC was ground handling on the beach at Primrose Sands (Tas) for three hours before the wind picked up and a couple of pilots took off and started flying. PIC was eager to fly so set up and launched. After a good launch, they found they had no forward speed and started to drift backwards. They applied speedbar until they came back to the ground and attempted to kill the wing with brakes causing them to get dragged behind the dunes, stopping when the wing got caught in a large bush. AIRS #1635 – PG hitting bushes during ridge soaring PIC was flying their paraglider from the Nuns Beach launch at Portland (Vic). Whilst ridge soaring, they found no lift from an area where they expected lift and dropped into bushes as a result. AIRS #1642 – PG tree incident at Long Reef NE Site A low hours PG2 pilot launched from Long Reef NE (NSW), into a weak, crossed wind. Lemon Hill, Tasmania Photo: Ramon Brasnja
