22 SKY SAILOR March | April 2022 Our amazing ground crew got everyone off the deck within 30 minutes with no one needing a reflight! Great work in temperatures exceeding 37°C. Jonny Durand wrapped up: “Conditions were a little tricky around launch and 10 minutes from the start, nearly everyone was together, all doing our own thing, with no one ending up with the perfect start. First leg was good if you stayed high, I managed to pull away after hitting some strong climbs. After Alectown, we faced a 101km cross/tailwind leg to Trangie. The sky blued up on course line and I was forced to go more upwind. Lift became broken and I didn’t reach cloudbase again. Attila had a similar story, whilst day winner Trent claimed to have had a good run with 700ft/ min climbs, even a 1000ft/min one on the second leg. Both flew over me and Trent beat Attila by a couple of minutes, with me 10 minutes behind. Around eight pilots made goal, with Scott landing out. Not the day to be low, trying to catch up.” While Attila extends his lead, the board takes a change for second and third with all spots up for grabs – Open Class and Sport Class scores. Forbes 22, Day 6, Task 6 The hottest day of the comp – temperatures in the paddock exceeded 40°C! The increase in temperatures meant no clouds for today’s task, a dogleg heading north to Trangie with goal at Gilgandra, total distance just over 200km. Many pilots landed out and were late re- turning home. Only Attila and Jonas made goal after a whole gaggle landed 5/10km short as the slower conditions and the SE wind drifted them off course line. Attila extended his lead, but the mid-field battle hotted up! Notable mention to Scott Ireland for making goal in the Sport Class, unfortunately two eagles tried to help him along the way and left quite a mark on his glider – Open Class and Sport Class scores. Wrap up from Jonas Lobitz: “Similar forecast to yesterday with 20-30km/h SW winds, 6-700ft/min climbs up to 9000ft, scat- tered cu’s and patchy lift, but without the trough line we had to navigate yesterday. The committee called a 192km dogleg to Gilgandra with a 20km TP radius at Trangie to keep the field away from Narromine and Dubbo airspace.
