10 SKY SAILOR March | April 2024 On Thursday evening we held a raffle and auction dinner at the Tintaldra pub to raise money for the Corryong emergency services. It was a fun night for all involved, and together we raised a total of $6700. Phillip Campbell offered to shave off his beloved beard which he’s groomed over 15 years. His only conditions were that there would be a $1000 reserve price and that the ‘shearing’ was done by Miss Amber (Phil’s old man crush). After some rapid, spirited bidding, the auction price exceeded the reserve, when a group showing of hands was used to pledge $50 each to add to the bid. The beard came off for the price of $2100. Phil has spent the last few weeks going unrecognised by those who didn’t know him before the beard. Friday, 12 January (Day 6, Task 4), was a blue day with slower climbs. A 69km task was called for the Open class and 32km for the Floaters with both finishing at the Khancoban airfield. Khancoban airfield has everything you want in a goal. Spectacular view, a huge mown grass landing area and shady trees where you can drink your goal beer while packing up. Unfor- tunately, only three pilots made it. Stu Cathcart won the day in Open and Andy Schmidt was the only Floater to get around the course. Saturday, 13 January, was to be our last day, but storm cells sweeping over the valley had other ideas. At the morning briefing in town the task was cancelled so pilots could spend the day on other activities. Later that afternoon, pilots gathered for a Q&A session with the Australian team pilots. How lucky are we to have elite level pilots sharing knowlege and ideas to help other pilots develop XC competition skills? Thanks to all involved! Photos: Darcy Kirkaldy Corryong Cup 2024
