SAFA SkySailor Magazine

29 March | April 2024 SKY SAILOR of 2021 . Embedded within these documents is a protection from liability for the ATSB and its officers. For example, the ATSB may investi- gate an accident and determine that a person or persons was responsible by their actions or inactions. Legal proceedings against the ATSB cannot be launched because of the publication of those findings. SAFA has no such authority to investigate or the protection afforded, and this is why we avoid the use of the word investigate and instead, we review. When an AIRS report comes in, they are screened and assigned to an AIRS Manager, from the club or region where the event has occurred. AIRS Managers provide the local knowledge of the sites involved, and how the local meteorological conditions affect operations at those sites. AIRS Managers may also personally know the pilots involved. When assigned a report, an AIRS Manager will typically pick up the phone and start talking with the pilot and witnesses to tease out the details of what has occurred. They will add this information to the AIRS report. At this stage, our process can start to slow down. There may not be an AIRS Manager in that area, and if that is the case, I as the Safety Manager will review the event, but that needs to be fitted into my work schedule. Not always an easy task. Our AIRS Managers are volunteers and give freely of their time. They need to fit in the reviews within their work commitments, other commitments of their own, with their own pressures and it can take time for them to conduct their reviews. This in some way explains why you will see many reports listed as ‘under review’. But, as you scroll through the reports in the member’s area of the website, you will begin to see reports that have been completed. SAFA is always happy to welcome people who would like to volunteer their time to assist with safety. If you feel you can offer your club or association your expertise to assist, have a talk with your club’s safety officers and com- mittee. If they accept your offer, they will put a nomination into SAFA. Fly safe. Forms and Documents SAFA Documents are now available in the Member Zone of the SAFA website .
