8 SKY SAILOR March | April 2024 Corryong Cup 2024 hang gliding competition by Tracey Meyer Once again, the Corryong Cup was a resounding success in 2024. Building on the success of previous years, HGComps. com ran the Corryong Cup 24 with 65 pilots registering to compete. There were also a handful of free flyers leaving the hill before the open launch window. Thanks to the generous grant from Mt Beauty Bendigo Bank and Corryong Business Centre, the launch, bomb-out and goal had much needed shade marquees, new wave banners to indicate wind direction and T-shirts that will be worn until they fall off the pilots’ backs! The first couple of days were hampered by the stormy weather that seemed to have affected most of Australia. Will we see the El Niño that The Bureau promised? The whole area was still green, perhaps not as green as a couple of years back, but very close to. Similar to last year, the heights gained were limited to 7-8000ft, however, the climb rates were still good. Due to the lower bases, shorter tasks were called, although this didn’t correspond to more in goal.
