SAFA Skysailor Magazine

25 May | June 2021 SKY SAILOR by Hugh Alexander Birchip really turned on a splendid weekend of weather for flying over the Easter period. Flying from McClellands farm at Jill Jill, the wind was blowing, generally lightly, from a different direction each day, allowing us to set 'goal' in a variety of places. On Sunday, the thermals – or rising hot air – allowed us to gain heights of 8700ft, nearly 3km! The task was set to Lake Marmal, about 30km south-east of Wytcheproof. Other flights were to Watchem, Lake Boga and 20km ‘somewhere’ north of Berriwillock. Our goal girl Nicki, accompanied by Jasper the Australian Shepherd (goal dog), were there waiting with goal beer, brewed and labelled especially for the competition by Alan Beavis. Twenty-five pilots attended, which meant around 35 people were in town for the Easter break. Many thanks to the friendly community of Birchip and sur- rounds and especially the McClellands for allowing us to use their paddock.
