9 May | June 2023 SKY SAILOR Results: 1st Magdy Malik (AUS, Advance XAlps 3, Comp (EN-D/CCC/2-liners) 186 points); 2nd Harry Davies (AUS, Phi Allegro Light, Sport (up to EN-C) 116 points), 3rd Keo Phetsaya (AUS, Advance Sigma 11, Sport, 100 points). Day 6 A very similar day to yesterday, initially with N winds later swinging around to NW-W as the upper level westerly pushed the lingering trough away. What wasn’t in any of the forecasts was the overdeveloping clouds with rain showers and later even some storms on the tablelands. The launchable part of the day started an hour later than the previous day once the wind came more onto the west side of Mt Borah. Most ended up heading east towards the tablelands (Bendemeer, Armidale, etc), using the main upper level wind direction and the 3000m plus cloudbase to best advantage. Some also tried a more northerly route early via Split Rock Dam managing around 60km. Best of the day and the winner by a big margin was a flight to just short of Dorrigo on the eastern edge of the Great Dividing Range by Magdy Malik (Sydney) – a distance of 186km. Quite a few pilots flew PBs again, despite the more difficult conditions with the stronger winds chopping up smaller thermals. The sunset ridge soar was epic again for those who returned early, with over 50 pilots enjoying the cooler cruisy air. Day 5 and 6 All photos: Courtesy Godfrey Wenness
