30 SKY SAILOR May | June 2024 It didn’t stop there, aerobatic planes flew over head, aerial performance artists dazzled with elegance and strength in their crowd pleasing performances. Talks from trailblazers in the scene – YouTube sensation Benjamin Kellet, and Redbull X-Alps athlete Kinga Masztalerz – a Kids Zone with bouncy castle and Spiderman space net nestled amidst the trees, all kept ticket holders entertained in the sky and on the ground. Then there was the music, variety from live bands, DJs and local musicians, bringing the dance floor to life for the masses. Everyone could celebrate, let loose and make memories. As the festival wrapped up on Sunday, Organiser Vicki said, “We have kick-started something so unique and special for our sports and communities here in the South Island, and that’s down to everyone who turned up, showed their support and believed in the vision.” The festival was made possible with the help of some incredible people in the community – to pull off a week of air sports without a single mishap is a credit to all involved. Eric Pemberton was the man behind the controls of the skydiving plane, which he flew in from the North Island. The driving force behind all of the skydiving and fun jumps was Sue Walsh, President of New Zealand’s Parachute Federation. Nick Taber, CEO of the NZHGPA provided the backing of the national flying association. The Southern Hang and Paragliding Club didn’t falter in supporting the vision of Magic Land. This community of flying legends made the festival a success. As the sun went down on Sunday, and the wind finally started to blow, all there went, “We can’t wait to do it all again next year!” Those who missed out on the action and want to experience the highs of the week can find photos and videos from many incredible photographers th on the Magic Land website.
