28 SKY SAILOR November | December 2021 North Queensland is a vast area of flying possibilities with two active clubs – Cairns Hang Gliding Club and the Far North Queensland Paragliding Club – managing the following main sites. Mt Inkerman Sitting at around 200m ASL, this launch is located 10km south of Home Hill (90 minutes south of Townsville) and is now a popular paragliding site, previously used as a hang gliding site. A bitumen road leads to the top where a car park and toilets are located. There are two launches allowing for SW to E wind directions. Mt Inkerman offers ridge soaring and flatland XC flying. Wunjunga This small beach community has a hill to ridge soar. Located 20 minutes from Mt Inkerman on the coast, the launch is not easy to locate and requires local pilot directions. Accessing the launch requires a short walk along the beach and small climb up the face of the ridge. Wunjunga takes a ENE to N wind directions. Toomulla Located about 30 minutes north of Townsville, Toomulla offers a small coastal ridge to soar. The site takes a NE to N wind but also requires a low tide below 1m to allow access to launch and a bomb-out option. Launch is a short walk along the beach, followed by a short climb. Fly North Queensland – all year round!
