11 November | December 2022 SKY SAILOR into the wind. Those who got stuck in the lee weren’t able to progress. The five who made it were Martin Jovanoski fastest, followed by Moonseob Lim, Jan Jares, Jihun Lee and Taesu Lee. With much clearer skies, task 2 was a 80km task via two turnpoints. It was a very technical day with lots of cycles. Pilots had to choose their moment to push. Decisionmaking about when to stop and climb, when to leave weakening climbs and different route choices was important. The central flat section of the race offered blue skies before pilots rejoined the mountains for the end of the task. Interestingly, there were no terrible lines, just decent lines and even better lines, sometimes extended lines of lift especially in the flats with perfect, super light winds. Rice fields, view of Hadong launch and pilots scratching Photos: Daniel Crespo A day for staying high and flying as efficient as possible. There were gaggles of birds to follow, the scenery was stunning with cold, clear air affording great views of the ocean, and yellow rice terraces filled the flats between the mountains. German/Korean pilot Torsten Siegel summed up the day for foreigners and locals, “That was the nicest cross-country flight I have ever had in Korea!”
