13 November | December 2024 SKY SAILOR Photo: Pilots flew three great tasks in the Sunshine State to decide the winner of the Spandicup in Canungra. Dan Thullier took the overall honours, while Ian McFarlane won the Sports class, Steve Purdon took out the Fun prize, and Alison Cawte was highest placed woman, coming third in the Sports class. The Canungra Spandicup is a new and inno- vative concept in competition flying. Classes are based on the flat span of each glider in an attempt to even out the playing field and negate the performance advantage of bigger gliders. The hope was to see smaller pilots punch above their weight. The format certainly had the international field of nearly 40 pilots talking and enjoying flying interesting tasks. The largest gliders flew to smaller turnpoints and smaller gliders to larger cylinders. This shortened the course for the less performant, whilst keeping the spirit of a race to goal and the first to arrive taking the glory.
