SAFA Skysailor Magazine
33 November | December 2024 SKY SAILOR ‘Go for Goal’, the brainchild of Greg Hurst and the other event organisers making for sheer awesomeness! As we prepare for our various journeys to Corryong, we are provided with a series of easily understood and practical documents on: • • instrument set-up and use (including radio set-up); • • tracking, retrieves & safety; • • waypoints, uploading and organising tasks, navigation and IGC files; • • and local area maps (including no-landing zones). A great lesson in preparation. Turning up at the event HQ, we are warmly welcomed, regardless of who we are – this is the free-flying family we love. Everyone is interested in flying, but it quickly becomes apparent that we’re going to get more than airtime from this event. Catching up with old acquaintances is another bonus. Once we get through the obligatory administrative necessities (yes, these allow us to continue to fly), we team up to discuss thermalling and gliding, especially in a XC context. This quickly becomes much more than most of us had previously thought, and adds another dimension to the gaggle and how we can stay up longer and push out more, by competitively-cooperating to make what- ever goal we have more achievable. Weather plays a big part in what we do and when we get to do it, so current and forecast weather is presented and discussed through- out each day, especially in the context of what we’ll get out of a given day.
