SAFA Skysailor Magazine
37 November | December 2024 SKY SAILOR Pilots should thoroughly assess the progress of rain if observed before launch and not launch if at all uncertain. Rain on the wing surface will disturb airflow over the surface, increasing the likelihood of a stall due to the lowered airspeed stall point. If rain develops whilst in the air, land as soon as possible. #1579 – Heavy PG landing at Rosins Lookout, Qld/S PIC had been flying their paraglider for an hour at Beechmont (Qld/S) and was preparing to top-land on the launch face. As they approached under big ears on their second attempt, they encountered some rough air, and the wing went into a parachutal descent from 5m AGL. PIC landed with straight legs and rolled forward through 360 degrees, heard a crunch from between their shoulders and were winded. After driving home, the pain increased, causing them to call an ambulance. A subsequent CT scan revealed a stable fracture of T5 vertebra. When the attempt to face land at Beechmont launch reveals a northerly headwind with turbulence, then consider an alternate top or bottom landing instead. 2410.5006 Ever had call close ? flightsafetyaustralia.com/submit Submit your story at 8 in 10 pilots say they learn best from other pilots and your narrow escape can be a valuable lesson.
