SAFA Skysailor Magazine

12 SKY SAILOR September | October 2021 My background I have been paragliding for just over a year. That year Covid hit, just weeks after getting my PG2, plus I live in Tassie where flying days are fickle. So, despite having a lot of free time and trying really hard, I only got 37 hours airtime in a year, with another eight hours in one week at Bright while doing the tow endorsement needed to do SIV (the ironic thing being that towing seems to be less safe than doing SIV!). I had also done about 40 hours of ground handling during that year. I had wanted to chase XC from day one, but there were days last season when I walked off the hill because the thermals were so strong and I didn’t feel I had the skills needed. The risk wasn’t worth it. Yet, I didn’t want to miss out on those days, so I decided that SIV was a must for me. SIV: Is it for you? by Brad Harris “The best thing I’ve spent money on since starting paragliding,” was my quote in the review for SkySurf Paragliding after doing an SIV course. It was exactly what I needed, but it might not be for everyone…
