18 SKY SAILOR September | October 2021 Canungra Classic – gearing up for 2021 The Canungra Classic has been running for some 30 years, offering the opportunity to gain points on the Australian competition ladder. Pilots can climb to cloudbase over Beechmont, SE Queensland, and capture tailwinds over the back of the Border Ranges. This is one of the most scenic places in the country. Canungra is a famous Australian free flying area of the Gold Coast region with several take-offs for a variety of wind directions located on high tree-covered mountain ridges. The area is about 30km from the east coast with sea-breezes intermingling in the after- noon to produce varying buoyancy conditions. The Canungra Classic event offers eight days of competition, instruction, mentoring, cama- raderie, and connection for pilots from around the country. It is always a highly anticipated and well-attended event. The focus of the competition this year will be to encourage novice pilots to embrace the values of competition flying, introducing begin- ners to the principles and strategies required to compete. These tasks will be supported by more experienced competition pilots.
