SAFA Skysailor Magazine

35 September | October 2021 SKY SAILOR kept close to terrain to stay in the lift band. A change in the wind lifted them and caused the wing to snag a branch on nearby vegetation which swung them back into the ridge. They remained on their feet and were helped back to the beach below. Minor bruising and a hole in the wing were the results. Low airtime pilots should observe other pilots’ flight path and lift patterns closely, particularly in light conditions. Always maintain a safe distance from obstacles and terrain. Allow a margin for changing conditions. AIRS #1453 – Bush landing at Southside, Bells Beach A PG2 pilot was flying their paraglider at South- side (Vic). They stayed close to the launch for a while to access enough lift before heading west after gaining sufficient height. They then entered an area of rotored air low to terrain. The pilot landed in trees close to a very steep cliff edge. No injury or damage to the glider. Supervising or senior pilots should always include details of rotor and how to avoid issues for this section of this site in the site briefing.
