SAFA Skysailor Magazine

17 September | October 2024 SKY SAILOR a more detailed appreciation of the sport. Mal’s ‘can-do’ attitude achieved results via experimenting, finessing and then expanding the simulator’s capabilities. The software’s high degree of customisation empowers users to craft their own launch locations globally and incorporate features like trees, rocks, towers, buildings and other aerial obstacles. Flying conditions and thermals are also fully adjustable. Scenarios can be saved for regular practice or competitions between pilots. Designed for adaptability, the simulator software is easily configurable and ready to embrace future enhancements. Current Developments • • AI Gliders: Enhanced competition and collision avoidance training. • • Emergency Simulation: Practice critical in-flight recovery procedures. • • Multiplayer: Connect and fly with pilots worldwide. • • Aircraft Design and Aerodynamics: Visualise forces, create, experiment with and optimise paraglider designs. • • Portable Motion Rig: Take the immersive experience anywhere. Set-up and admin arrangements The SkySailor simulator has been set up at Jet Flight Simulator Canberra (JFSC), North Lyneham. CanGlide has a very good working relationship with Trevor Vickers, the proprietor of JFSC, allowing 24/7 access for our local club members. More information about our set-up in the ACT, including feedback and comments from those who have tried VR paragliding simulation, is available here . CanGlide was established as a separate economic entity to the ACT Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association (ACTHPA) in 2021 due to the cost and, to some extent, the risk associated with the first simulator we tried. The current SkySailor simulator is cheaper to operate and has less formal arrangements for maintenance and software development, making it more feasible for a club to manage in much the same way it manages local flying sites. Key benefits of VR simulation for paragliding Accessibility: One of the key benefits of VR simulation is its accessibility to a wider audience. With VR technology becoming more affordable and available, individuals can conveniently experience the thrill of par- agliding in complete safety. This accessibility opens opportunities for people who may not have the resources or physical capabilities to participate in the sport in real life. Safety: As we are all acutely aware, safety is a concern in paragliding. VR simulation pro- vides a safe option for individuals to practise and experience the sport in a virtual environ- ment. This can help build a pilot’s confidence and skills to augment real world instruction and help to reduce the risk of accidents and minimising potential injuries.
