SAFA Skysailor Magazine

4 SKY SAILOR September | October 2024 There’s something magical about experiencing flight at a new location. While any novel flying spot can be exhilarating, there’s an extra layer of excitement when you’re among the first to explore a newly opened site. Recently, a group of us had the pleasure of exploring a new hike and fly site south of Canberra. As I made my way up the trail last weekend, I was reminded of my promise to share some insights about sites and insurance in this update. We’ve recently updated SAFA’s Site Manage- ment policy, available in the members’ section of our website. This refreshed framework aims to streamline the administration, manage- ment, maintenance, and development of flying sites. Highlights include: • • Prioritising landowners’ interests. • • ‘Recognised Sites’ are better defined, including the relationship with the Australian National Site Guide (ANSG), and the responsibilities of Site Managers. • • The acknowledgement of a ‘Temporary Recognised Site’ provides a mechanism for PG2/HG2 and PG3 pilots to fly from sites not listed in the ANSG, provided an appropriately qualified Duty Pilot is present to control flying operations. • • Establishing Site Rules as official SAFA guidelines • • Over time, we would like to see a few of our iconic sites be recognised as ‘Sites of National Significance’.
