SAFA Skysailor Magazine

5 September | October 2024 SKY SAILOR As we embark on a new financial year, we’ve also renewed our Aviation Liability insurance policy. While the intricacies of insurance can be complex, it’s crucial to understand its importance • • Our sport carries inherent risks, which we willingly accept. This combination gives rise to ‘strict liability’ in aviation incidents or accidents. • • Our aviation liability policy protects SAFA members, the organisation itself, clubs, and landowners from potential third-party liabilities. • • While the cost is significant – about half of our annual membership fees – it’s necessary for us to enjoy flying. • • Most importantly, this insurance is often a requirement for accessing flying sites, as landowners typically insist on coverage. I’ve noticed through conversations with fellow SAFA members that there’s some confusion surrounding our insurance. If your club would like a more detailed presentation, please don’t hesitate to reach out through the SAFA website, and we’ll arrange a time to discuss it further. While site management and insurance might not be the most thrilling aspects of our sport, they’re essential for ensuring we can continue to enjoy the skies safely and responsibly. As I caught a punchy winter thermal above our new site last weekend, all thoughts of paperwork and policies melted away. After all, it’s moments like these that remind us why we fell in love with flying in the first place. All photos: Paul ‘Shippers’ Shipley
