20 SKY SAILOR September-October-November | SPRING 2025 Taking off from Kronplatz (2275m) in northern Italy, the Austrian border lay 55km to the east. Rob Law’s, a Tour 1 regular, had managed it, watching his tracklog show the way, though without the looming thunderstorms. At each morning briefing, R&R would put together our tracklogs, offer feedback, and pilots could share insights into their decision-making. This valuable discussion improved my flying immensely. Even after flying for over 30 years, there is always something more to learn. I did my homework at night (after social activities and delicious Austrian or Italian cuisine), and looked at where pilots got their lift. Conditions were never the same, but that background knowledge helped me make the most of available lift, stay safe without putting myself into vulnerable landing positions, and achieve my goals.
