36 SKY SAILOR September-October-November | SPRING 2025 of land being used, just a lot, lot older in architecture than at home, except for our First Nations mob. The mountains just rose from the ground everywhere as we drove up to Àger, heading towards the Pyrenees – I was already in love with the place! Perhaps my dad’s tales that us ‘Osbornes’ had Spanish DNA had some truth to them! Then there was the flying. The mountain ridge we stared up at in awe from our balcony was site of the Àger World Hang Gliding Championships – just epic! The perfect backdrop to our ‘home’ for the next two weeks, I couldn’t wait to get up there and have my first fly off the mountain. I had rented an older RX3.5 off a nice British pilot who shall remain nameless for fear of him being misidentified as the more ‘famous’ Darren Brown. My practice flight was very nice, a 2000ft sled ride to the bottom, but my landing was not so good. On approach to land, the wind decided to do a 180-degree change of direction, and I was picking my way over a fence, downhill, trying to adjust my flight path up hill to avoid any obstacles, then crosswind, up-hill, down… and I swung through and put the biggest bend in my What a blast!
