70 SKY SAILOR September-October-November | SPRING 2025 a difficult situation for landing. In addition, the beach was quite crowded which added more difficulty to the predicament. The pilot eventually stopped in quite shallow water, but the surf was heavy and quickly started to drag them out to sea. PIC was unable to free themselves and had to be rescued by bystanders. No damage or injury was reported. Supervised pilots must fly under adequate supervision. If a supervisor is not available, do not fly! Always conduct a thorough assessment of the site, conditions and landing options before making the decision to fly. If unsure or the conditions are not suitable, do not fly! #2105 – PG tree landing at Stanwell Park, NSW A PG2 pilot, visiting with others from Mt Blackheath, had launched from Bald Hill, Stanwell Park (NSW). They had received a site briefing and advice from a local SSO and were under supervision from the other visiting pilots. The wind di- rection was easterly and light. Soon after launching, and realising they were low, PIC came closer to the hill as advised and found some lift. PIC then exited that area and found themselves sinking in a bowl. They were advised to go deeper in the bowl where there had been lift previously in the day, but to no avail. Recognising the peril they now faced, PIC avoided one tree but landed in another. An extraction was commenced by local arborists, with police rescue joining later. No damage or injury. Always keep in mind and update regularly your escape route to the nearest safe landing zone. Do not hesitate to head straight to a safe landing if the circumstances dictate. All pilots and particularly supervising pilots should bear in mind that every flight is different; lift found in one location previously may well not be present on a later occasion; your supervised pilot may not have the skills, AIRS Safety Wrap-up
