Shortly afterwards they were observed approx. 50m above and slightly behind launch. The supervising pilot called them on radio and advised PIC to apply speedbar to aid forward penetration. Sometime later, the pilot made a call on the radio to advise they had landed heavily through some trees, had a sore back and required assistance. PIC was located some 200m behind launch. The supervising pilot walked to the accident site, packed up the pilot’s gear (wing badly torn by trees) and assisted them back to launch. PIC was able to walk unaided. The next day the pilot was diagnosed as having suffered fractures to L2 and L3 vertebrae. Although the reported wind was not particularly strong, it is not uncommon for compression over the top of the hill to cause local increase in wind strength and sink. Pilots are advised to apply speedbar if forward penetration is reduced; monitor
