66 SKY SAILOR December-January-February | SUMMER 2025/2026 to resolve twisted risers (as this can happen in any class of glider). #2110 – PG incident, Tas PIC was flying at Little Green Hill (Tas), which has an average lift band. PIC may have flown through some sink and found themselves low to the ground and near some dead trees. PIC panicked after speedbar accelerated their sink rate and turned downwind where they had a fast downwind landing and suffered a sprained right ankle and bruised right knee. Once landed, PIC was subsequently dragged up to the top of the hill, behind a log, and dragged again to the side of the hill, in- curring a bruised left elbow and shoulder. Allow plenty of clearance from terrain and obstacles so that if sink is encountered one still has options for a safe landing. Always be prepared to kill the wing on touch down in stronger conditions. Be prepared to execute a PLF (parachute landing fall) if a hard landing is imminent. #2112 – PG, Little Green Hill 31/05/25, Tas PIC was flying in strong conditions at Little Green Hill (Tas). They placed themselves behind the hill and into venturi. PIC con- tinued to get pushed behind the hill and landed in turbulence between trees. No damage or injury. Ensure you receive a thorough site briefing for the conditions before launching. If the wind is upper end at launch, assess the conditions against your abilities and perhaps choose not to fly. If flying in strong conditions, push forward and away from venturi locations; there is plenty of lift forward of the hill due to the compression effect. AIRS Safety Wrap-up
