SAFA Skysailor Magazine
10 SKY SAILOR June-July-August | WINTER 2025 The Apostles and the surrounding area have a neighbourly flight zone: All aircraft flying west must be at 1000ft, and all air- craft flying east must be at 1500ft. Tourist helicopters will be at 500-750ft. One of us made the radio call announcing our arrival and intentions. As usual, whilst there were six aircraft and a few helicopters in the air, it was difficult to spot any of them. As we flew along the Shipwreck Coast, the steep, high cliff faces offer striking colour differ- ences against the emerald green ocean crashing against them. There are now only eight Apostles still standing. Number nine came crashing down from erosion in 2005. My understanding is that 2cm a year is eroded from their bases, so, if you have not yet had a chance to visit this site by trike, do it soon. As we made our way past the visitors area, my thoughts turned to the ships that found themselves wrecked along here – about 700 odd wrecks are in the area with only 240 discovered as yet.
