26 SKY SAILOR June-July-August | WINTER 2025 actually needed on some tasks to tackle the massive crossing to a rock formation known as Mt Mitta Mitta. Aussies are quick to point out this land mass is similar to Uluru (Ayers Rock), but covered with black rock and trees, and bigger – an awesome thermal heat blanket. It was the centre of attention during one task, and a first for me as I completed a 50km triangle flight around it. Flying between 5000 and 8000ft was the norm, it could get a little bumpy passing through the inversion layer, which required a good rising thermal to punch through, allowing 10,000ft to be reached. Australian Sports Class Paragliding Championship You could tell when you had passed the inversion as the temperature dropped and the air was smoother. Flying skills learnt back home, like tree scratching, were needed too, with some 100ft out of harness low saves. Bruno commented that he got so low, kangaroos were jumping higher than he was. What a great asset Volandoo Tracking is for those wishing to watch individuals or groups of pilots competing. Friends and family could view from afar, some kept track from New Zealand.
