58 SKY SAILOR June-July-August | WINTER 2025 flight instruments later indicated 6km/h wind on ground. The pilot sustained mild contusion L forearm, mild bruising L palm, L wrist, R wrist, nose, head (possibly not from the accident), stiff neck. These were mostly noticed the following day. As the pilot demonstrated, an increase in approach speed should be initiated prior to round out and flare to account for the wind gradient close to the ground. A severe gradient appears to have been encountered. Always approach landing with greater speed, always be prepared to encounter wind gradient. #1827 – PG tailwind landing on slope, Ma Ma Creek, Qld/S PIC launched their paraglider at Ma Ma Creek (Qld/S) and encountered thermic lift in close proximity to launch. The pilot commenced a turn, then encountered sink, sending them back towards launch where a collision occurred with the slope. Minor injury to both feet resulted. Pilots should always ensure clearance from terrain prior to commencing a turn, either by height or horizontal distance, and maintain a safe margin to allow for changes in atmospheric conditions. If below the top of the hill, or with insufficient clearance, always turn away and make figure-8 turns to make use of the lift. #1832 – PG wing cravat, tree landing, Qld/S The PIC set up to launch at Gerrard’s Lookout (Qld/S). Weather conditions were good, with wind direction straight on and light, 5kt. PIC launched, but a few seconds into the flight PIC noticed a cravat in the left wing tip. Later another pilot informed AIRS Safety Wrap-up
