60 SKY SAILOR June-July-August | WINTER 2025 can be tried. If this is not successful, the PIC should land as soon as safe to do so. #1840 – PG accident Tenthill, Qld/S PIC was ground handling at Tenthill (Qld/S), waiting for conditions to allow flight. As conditions improved, they prepared for flight. Upon inflation of the wing, a crosswind gust caused the wing to fall to one side and drag the pilot across the ground for approximately 20m. PIC impacted a small, dead tree and a branch impaled their thigh. PIC removed the branch from the wound, first aid was provided, and they were transported to hospital for treatment. Pilots should practise crosswind launch procedures in a safe location. Whilst doing so, practise killing the wing in various wind strengths and orientations. #1842 – HG launch fails due to a gust and early transition to base-bar, Vic At Spion (VIC), the wind was a gusty 5-15kt. PIC decided to launch their hang glider when it felt to be about 10kt. Walking with the glider, holding the uprights, the pilot felt a gust build and started to switch to the base-bar mid launch to gain more control. However, the gust lifted the left wing, causing the glider to turn into the bushes to the right of launch. PIC could not counteract the turn during the transition to the base-bar. The pilot reported more time before launch should have been spent gauging the conditions. Additionally, transitioning to the base-bar early in the launch put PIC in a position where the glider could not be adequately controlled. PIC sustained superficial cuts. No glider damage. Aviate! When launching from the uprights, ensure adequate time and distance away from the launch has been achieved before AIRS Safety Wrap-up
