62 SKY SAILOR June-July-August | WINTER 2025 #1904 – HG crash after launch, Vic PIC launched at Mt Broughton (Vic, and ground looped into hillside. Weather was described as generally light and partially crossed from the left, but coming up-slope occasionally allowing for launch windows. Launch only when wings are level, then launch with as much launch speed as possible, particularly in lighter winds or crosswinds. Excess speed can be converted to altitude. A higher speed will reduce the apparent wind ‘seen’ by the wing, reducing the tendency for the glider to turn after launch. #2016 – Undone PG leg loops, Qld/S PIC was preparing to launch from Mt Tamborine (Qld/S). They inflated their wing and proceeded to run down launch. As PIC left the ground, they quickly realised that their leg loops were not done up. As they started to slip out of the harness, PIC decided to fully let go and fall out before they were too high. The ground at the front of launch very quickly drops away and becomes an 80-degree cliff. The pilot fell approximately 5m while still holding the brakes, which stalled the wing. PIC landed on their feet on the steep slope, then fell onto the harness. No injury. All pilots are reminded of the absolute necessity to complete all pre-flight checks. If distracted, start again. Closing leg straps should be the first action after putting both arms through the shoulder straps. Failure to close leg straps can lead to, and has led to, a fatal event. #2023 – Mystic PG launch 1/11/24, Vic A paraglider pilot launched at Mystic (Vic) with a cravat in their wing. The pilot became preoccupied with resolving the cravat and failed to maintain situational AIRS Safety Wrap-up
