8 SKY SAILOR June-July-August | WINTER 2025 radio making a taxi call for our departure runway 35. I communicated we would let them go first, which was greatly appreciat- ed. Pressure to get going from the others now felt intense, at least in my mind, so I made the call and we were off. As we turned 180º on departure, the headwind increased and our relatively light wind day turned slightly more difficult. We passed several wind farms and under- stood why they are located in this area. For navigation, I followed a transmission line that headed in our direction. We passed Lake Gnapurt on its western side, and the town of Camperdown. With lush green fields and the many waterways, you saw why new settlers wanted this land. Once past Camperdown, Cobden came into view and the landmark Fonterra Dairy, near the end of Cobden airport. We all landed safely and congratulated ourselves on a great flight. One of the support road travellers was already on site – perfect! The local flying club very generously offered us the use of their club rooms and facilities which we greatly appreciated. • Airtime: 60 minutes • Distance: 66.3nm • Average speed: 66.3kt Apostles and Shipwreck Coast fly-over Arriving at Cobden Photo: A Batson
