SAFA Skysailor Magazine
51 AUTUMN 2026 | March-April-May SKY SAILOR are going to use it in the air, it has to be trustworthy. The SoO sprint forced brutal clarity on what matters, what can wait, and what has to be rock solid. Now I’m a bit nervous to promise, but we plan to have Squiggly 2 live and running for the State of Origin 2026! Coco: Ham can focus on small details. For a couple of weeks, he obsessed with smoothing the lines on the Squiggly display so they didn’t have sharp angles. For that, the display had to be delayed by a few seconds to process the tracking points and smooth them into curves. But if someone was driving and turned onto a road, that line would get smoothed too! Now the app had to figure out whether a pilot was flying or driving which came with its own challenges. We ended up losing a few weeks to smoothing lines. One of the biggest challenges with Ham is convincing him that sometimes good enough really is enough. What are your favourite new features? Ham: The multi-tracker support. It’s not sexy, but it means the system doesn’t fall over when one tracker does. I also love the time travel. Right now, XContest is the only tool that lets you scrub back through a flight once the complete flight has been uploaded, and it mostly focuses on distance and scoring points. I want our flights to capture more than that. Flying is about more than dis- tance, and the tools we use to relive and analyse a day shape how we experience it, and how we choose to fly. Coco: My favourite feature actually hasn’t been built yet… I’m excited about the ‘status’ feature that will come later. Basically you’ll be able to land out and put up a status, like ‘walking north’ or ‘hitching from the main road’ so retrieve drivers and friends can see it straight away. It’s one of Trimming fancy lines of code for efficiency
