64 SKY SAILOR March-April-May | AUTUMN 2026 possibility of more serious damage in a similar situation. #1843 – Failed HG aerotow launch from a dolly at Locksley, Vic HG aerotowing at Locksley (VIC). Wind was cross (towing to the N, wind was off to east/right predominantly). The highly experienced PIC released from the dolly too early, noting that the tug had not left the ground and the dolly was not being lifted by the glider. On dolly release the right wing came up. The PIC had applied more VG than usual, causing the glider to be stiffer to respond, but this was not thought to be a contributor. The left corner of the A-frame remained on the dolly and the right corner elevated off the dolly. The tug at this time released the tow line whilst the glider left the dolly in a turn to the left. With little speed and height, the PIC let go of the control bar and curled up into a ball bracing for impact. The glider hit on the left corner of the A-frame, then rotated over and nosed in. The PIC then swung through and impacted the ground with his head. No damage to the glider. The PIC was slightly concussed with some short-term memory loss. An ambu- lance was called and took PIC to hospital to be properly assessed. CT and MRI scans indicated no damage other than muscular. It can happen to you. Highly experienced pilots make mistakes. Always ensure the tow dollies are lifting off the ground before releasing, never be in a hurry to release, if time is available before impact, release the control bar and grab the upper upright to absorb and redirect the impact forces. #1845 – HG ground towing acci- dent at Conargo, 11/06/23, NSW A 300 -hour PIC lined up for their first tow during a HG ground towing endorsement at Deniliquin (NSW).
