40 SKY SAILOR December-January-February | SUMMER 2025 #1622 – PG crash landing at Hinchcliffes, Qld/S PIC has launched their paraglider from Hinchcliffes (Qld/S). They were flying in the lower end of the weight range of the wing and in Hike & Fly mode, without instruments. After launching, PIC found lift about 100-150m forward and turned slightly above the launch height. On a second turn, they realised they were being blown back towards launch and on course for trees to the left. PIC applied right brake with a slight amount of left brake. They increased the application of right brake to the point of the wing entering an uncon- trolled spin, leading to them falling into the scrub with no damage or injury. When flying lightly loaded, the wing is not as agile, therefore when a pilot takes a more radical move to avoid an object or terrain, it’s easier to spin or stall as the air speed is also lower. Pilots should be aware of the wing loading and its effects. When pursuing lift in front of terrain, perform a figure-8 flight pattern until there is sufficient horizontal and vertical separation from obstructions and terrain, before pursuing a circular path. #1625 – PG rock landing, Lorne, Vic PIC was flying their paraglider at Lorne (Vic) and attempted to round a point into light headwind following other pilots. After losing altitude, they decided to turn back to land on a beach. Continuing to lose altitude, PIC collided with a rock em- bankment below the road. Pilots must maintain sufficient vertical and horizontal separation from obstacles, taking into account the wing strength and direction. Always keep a clear path to a safe landing open. #1636 – PG frontal collapse following take off, NSW PIC was preparing to launch their paraglider from Cromarty Hill, Forrester AIRS Safety Wrap-up
