11 July | August 2023 SKY SAILOR News Canungra Cup future under a cloud Community concern about the future of the international Canungra Cup in October mounts as business leaders join a chorus of over 200 pilots calling for the landing refusal to be lifted by Environment Minister Leanne Linard. Club spokesperson Alison Cawte said the future of the Cup depended on the Depart- ment of Environment allowing pilots to land on a 3ha paddock, the previous emergency LZ, below the launch site if necessary. “We are all worried about the impact of cancel- ling the Cup, both on the club’s members and the wider community and local businesses,” she said. “The Cup attracts many international pilots who are running out of time to make arrange- ments to participate this year. Businesses are wondering how a cancellation will impact their revenue for accommodation, food and functions. Our members want to get back into the air and get ready for competing in the Cup. The uncer- tainty is not fair or reasonable. We can’t keep telling our local community that we just don’t have an answer.” Visit the club’s website for updates. Point Cartwright Council Survey This survey closed on 2 July. The Sunshine Coast Sports Aviators club requested pilots to fill respond to the survey to make sure our feedback on changes planned to this flying site is clearly heard. The plan shows a proposed re-vegetation site numbered ‘7’ on the diagram, just south of where we launch. We support re-vegetation, using low growing shrubs. Question 2 asks “Do you have any other feedback on the draft master plan?” We suggested to respectfully state a preference for low growing shrubs. We now await the council’s decisions.
