12 SKY SAILOR July | August 2023 Paragliding World Cup Brasov, Romania – 24 June to 1 July 2023 The PWC in Brasov, Romania, is the first time the event has been held in this intriguing Eastern European city. Australian pilots Wally Arcidiancono and Kynan Wall joined the line up which also included six former PWC winners and 23 new pilots from across the globe. Brasov is in Transylvania, in the heart of Romania, surrounded by the picturesque Carpathian Mountains. It is one of the oldest cities in the country, and while it’s known for skiing and hiking, its reputation as a ‘gateway’ to the big mountains for paragliding is on the rise. In the mountains pilots can expect to find the occasional +7m/s climb, generally around 3-5m/s. Away from the mountains are the fertile flatlands, surrounded by tree covered hills. Thermals here average 1-2m/s, with low saves in short supply! Task 1 - 27 June After several rainy days, we woke to the best weather so far, blues skies and puffy clouds.
