SAFA SkySailor Magazine
15 March | April 2024 SKY SAILOR As the day wound down and cold beverages beckoned from base camp, pilots landed, eager to quench their thirst and swap tales of the day’s adventures with our hosts and each other. The evening festivities kicked off with music, drinks, and a BBQ, as stories and laughter filled the air. As the night wore on and fatigue set in, the playlist took a whimsical turn, culminating in a surprise celestial performance of ‘Also sprach Zarathustra’ (Theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey). Just as the music hit the crescendo, Iain frightened the life out of us jumping out of his chair to point at the starry sky with a holler: “There’s the ISS!” Sure enough, we watched the International Space Station fly overhead, much to our delight and amusement. Despite best efforts, the keg wasn’t emptied, and the surplus of limes (seven bags!) served as a humorous reminder of our enthusiastic planning. As we settled around the fire, relish- ing in the companionship of fellow pilots, we knew that this FoFF (and stories of the south Mediterranean) would linger long after the embers had faded in our memories. As the sun peeked over the horizon on Sunday morning, bleary-eyed pilots stumbled towards the promise of coffee, surveying the remnants of the night’s festivities with a mix of nostalgia and exhaustion. Steaming cups in hand, we set about clean up duty, restoring the campsite to its pristine condition. Tents were dismantled, gear stowed away. With the wind refusing to cooperate, pilots checked the weather one last time before reluctantly bidding farewell to Gaffs Hill. De- parting in all directions, thoughts of next year’s FoFF already occupied our minds, calendars ready poised to mark the dates for another unforgettable gathering of fabric-flying enthu- siasts, even as we returned to our daily lives. The Travestie Bar, you ask? Well, if you want to know the story you’ll need to come along next year. Fly Safe! Special thanks to Clarke Kent Events for orches- trating the event, ensuring that every detail was perfectly in place. Appreciation to all the pilots who graced us with their presence, adding to the merriment and fun. Above all, our deep gratitude to our hosts, the Headlam Family, whose unwav- ering support, friendship, and generosity made the FoFF possible. Without them, this gathering of fabric-flying enthusiasts wouldn’t have been possible. All of you made FoFF 2024 a truly unforgettable experience.
