17 March | April 2024 SKY SAILOR While on the topic of ducks, this year we will also be bringing back the ‘Drag Ducks’. This is a bit of fun to illustrate the laid-back nature of this ‘competition’. Each day winner has to fly all subsequent tasks with a Drag Duck attached to their glider. We are expecting 40 plus pilots this year which is a 30% increase on last year. You can A little more about Birchip FTTF… The comp has grown significantly since its first event in April 1992, 40 to 50 pilots are expected this year. FTTF is a car-towing comp ideal for tow rated, low airtime pilots. “What makes FTTF such a great event is its relaxed, laid back nature, with fun the aim of the game,” said organiser Phil Campbell. “The focus is all about having a good time with fellow pilots whether you’re new to the sport or have years of experience. Birchip caters to entry level pilots, with thermals around Easter generally subdued making it more suited to those with less experience.” Each day starts with a morning briefing at the Birchip Cropping Ground around 10am. Then a task briefing, held between 12 and 1pm in the tow paddock, 30km out of town. Tasks range between 40 to 80km downwind with no turnpoints. Flying in this dry, broad acre farming area makes landing paddock selection easy and pilots can relax and focus on staying in the air for longer. Places to stay include Birchip Caravan Park Motel, the Birchip Hotel, Lake Tchum camping (8km) and the Culgoa pub (44km). For further details visit www.hgcomps. com.au .
