20 SKY SAILOR May | June 2021 XCamp Tasmania 2021 by Mike Long – THPA President In the southernmost reaches of our beautiful land, an annual event has been quietly gaining momentum… XCamp Tasmania. Since its humble beginnings in 2019, XCamp Tasmania has grown year on year through word of mouth only. Whilst still an intimate gathering, attendance has doubled – this year attracting 30 pilots and family members, including pilots from Victoria. The event runs over a four-day period from Friday through to the following Monday. It originally started with a friendly XC distance focus, and has since morphed to more of a fun fly-in event, centred on just getting out and flying, with some friendly challenges based on the weather day by day. Each day ends back at base camp, with chilled out evenings around the fire pit. There is of course the ‘stinky pink jacket’ awarded to a pilot at the end of each day – based upon randomly observed accomplishments that day, from the longest flight to the craziest antics and everything in between!
