SAFA Skysailor Magazine

31 November | December 2022 SKY SAILOR Our current terminology refers to ratings, certificates, and qualifications, and a pilot being ‘signed off’ by an instructor or Senior Safety Officer. Using our Part 149 terminology, you will gain a pilot certificate, or endorsement, and apply for the issue of an Authorisation. Under our Part 149 certificate, only one person will be authorised to issue authorisations – the Operations Manager. Instructors will recommend the issue of an authorisation, and the OM will issue the au- thorisation. We will be required to surveil and audit persons who issue, or recommend the issue of, an authorisation. The process to obtain an authorisation will be: • • Meet the eligibility criteria, • • Pass any theory and flight tests, • • Lodge an application form with any required signature from your instructor or SSO, and any other required documents, • • Pay the applicable fee, • • When processed in the office and you have received a confirmation email with your Member Profile, you will be authorised. This will be the effective date of your authorisation. The demonstrated skills required are listed on the relevant application form. What is a Check Flight A Check Flight is conducted under certain circumstances. It is the method we use to ensure you can continue to safely exercise the privileges of your authorisation. It is usually conducted when you have not met the annual flight time requirements to hold your authorisation, or if you are a supervised (HG-Supervised, PG2) or PG3 pilot and have not undertaken three flights in the past 90 days. What is a Flight Review In essence, a Flight Review is a more detailed check flight. It is undertaken when a pilot is returning to flying after an extended break, or when a visiting overseas pilot wishes to fly in Australia, or when the holder of an FAI IPPI card wishes to have the equivalent SAFA certificates and/or endorsements added to their Visiting Pilot Membership profile. In some cir- cumstances, successful completion of relevant theory examinations may also be required. What is a Biennial Flight Review If you fly an aircraft over 70kg (i.e., the current CAO 95.32 aircraft like a WM, PPC or larger PPG) not only must the aircraft be registered, but the pilot is subject to a Biennial Flight Review. This can be conducted with an au- thorised person either from SAFA or RAAus. What is a Flight Test/Demonstrated Skills Test? When you apply for an authorisation, you may be required to undergo a flight test to satisfy the eligibility criteria for the authorisation you are applying for. The flight test must be conducted in the view of an instructor or, where applicable, an SSO, who will be required to attest you have satisfactorily demonstrated the required skills to them, in flight, or on the ground in preparation for the flight. This is a bite sized start to understanding the changes. Stay tuned for more information in the next issue.
