10 SKY SAILOR September | October 2021 Site briefing at Hoffman’s launch Rowan Gorringe (BGD) leads them off the hill at Hoffman’s Photos: Tex Bec who couldn’t stomach puns and Dad jokes should not attend. Despite this warning, nearly 70 pilots rocked up at the Killarney View Caravan Park, and a crew of about 15 headed to well-known Manilla for a swinging time. Sleeping together for four nights, new relationships formed and pilots at both camps got to know each other well. The Killarney camp was held at the beautiful, lesser known flying sites of Killarney, which sits at the junction of two of eastern Australia’s flying jewels – the Border Ranges and the Great Dividing Range. This big and beautiful section of land is hallmarked by loving ther- mals, that gave generously to eager pilots over the full four days of SeXC Camp. With four primary launch sites, Killarney can cater for most wind directions. After launching, pilots can choose whether to stay on the mountains to enjoy the beautiful views of hills, valleys, gorges and waterfalls, or head out to the adjacent flatlands for some distance. With heaps of landing options and roads it’s all very relaxed and enjoyable. An out and return or triangle can see you landing back at your campsite, ready for the next day. One of the nicest aspects of flying at Killarney are the friendly locals. The small township of Killarney is very supportive of the gliding community. Daily briefings at both camps provided clarity about sites, conditions, and logistics relating to vehicles and access sensitivities. At the Killarney camp, the efforts of six dedicated retrieve drivers were much appreciated, giving pilots the freedom to fly far. The pilots and retrieve team proficiently used WhatsApp live location, along with a tracking app being de- veloped by Hammed, called SQUIGGLY, which may become the world’s premier para-stalking SeXC things are happening at Australia’s hidden gem flying site
