40 SKY SAILOR September-October-November | SPRING 2026 Changes to SAFA insurance In 2023, our insurer offered SAFA coverage for our activities, excluding ‘ab-initio training, advanced training or training in any form’. This meant schools had to obtain their coverage via our broker directly from the insurer. The effect of this for SAFA was the exclusion of any and all flying training activities from our policy. This means flying training can only be undertaken by an instructor employed by a FTF with the appropriate Aviation Liability coverage in place. This has always been the case; only an instructor can instruct. The change specifically excluded those flying training activities from SAFA’s policies. As a consequence, SAFA sought to clarify what is and is not considered ‘training’ through our ‘Policy on Flight Training and Insurance’ (available in the Documents section of the Member’s Area of the website, under ‘Policies’). Essentially, nothing has changed regard- ing supervision, neither being supervised nor providing supervision. Let’s discuss what will be expected in most cases. There are, however, sites where supervision may take a different form because of the particulars of the site. The managing club will have developed their own guidelines for supervision at their sites. Supervised pilots should always On Supervised and Supervising Pilots by Iain Clarke – SAFA Safety Manager For this issue, I want to refresh the discussion on supervised pilots and supervising them. This article is primarily focused on PG2 Supervised and HG Supervised operations. It is less relevant for WM Pilot and PPG Pilot operations. Since the original article was published in SkySailor and Airwaves in 2020 and 2021 respectively, there have been several significant changes in our landscape. First was the transition to administering our patch of the sky as a CASA Approved Self-Administering Organisation (ASAO) under CASR Part 149. The second was the removal of flight training Aviation Liability insurance coverage from SAFA’s Group Aviation Liability Insurance policy, and hence the requirement for Flight Training Facilities (FTF) to hold separate Aviation Liability insurance policies to cover flight training activities.
