Are you eligible to supervise? As the Oper- ations Manual (V3.0 04/06/2025) Section 4.3 states, supervising pilots (Duty Pilots) are those who have achieved: • a minimum certification of HG-Inter- mediate or PG4, • a minimum of 50 hours flight experience at a site they are familiar with, • a minimum of 80 hours flight experience for sites/flight locations they are unfa- miliar with, These are considered minimum stan- dards, and some clubs will have more site- specific rules about who can supervise. You can only supervise pilots of the disciplines for which you hold a current pilot authorisation. If you are not comfortable with super- vising a pilot, then you are within your rights to refuse to do this. Taking on a supervision role does entail taking on more responsibility. You should, when first approached by a pilot, ascertain that they are current members of SAFA and that they hold a flight authorisation for which you are able to supervise. Establish the pilot’s history and experience. Are they mainly inland or coastal pilots? Are they used to small sites or large sites? Check their prior experience and flying equipment Ask to see their online logbook entries. Do they match the hours they claim to have flown at each membership renewal?
